Best Choke for Duck Hunting: What It Is, Why You Need It & How To Choose One

best choke for duck hunting

If there was ever an argument about who had better shooting skills – men or women – it would surely go to the men in my opinion. Women simply do not shoot as well as men because they don’t have access to guns as we do.

I’m sure if you polled all of our female readerships, many could point out several instances where their man didn’t hit his target due to poor gun handling skills (or lack thereof).

This is why so few people understand how critical it is to use a good-quality choke while hunting waterfowl.

A good quality choke should allow your shot to strike the bird’s head or neck and not pass through without striking something vital.

You may think that sounds pretty simple, but after years of hunting, even experienced shooters find themselves struggling to kill ducks using standard open chokes. They just aren’t designed properly to produce consistent results at longer ranges.

Once you master this technique you will be able to consistently get clean kills on birds that are often very difficult to bring down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Best Choke Tube For Duck And Goose Hunting?

The best chokes for duck hunting are made from carbon steel and have a round shank which allows them to attach directly to your shotgun barrels.

Here’s some information on what makes up a “good” choking device…

Choking devices come in two different styles – fixed and adjustable.

Fixed chokes only adjust one way and are typically found on rifles or shotguns.

Adjustable choking devices feature either knobs or levers that move linearly along a tube.

Most manufacturers offer both types of adjustable chokers, so make certain you know which type yours has before making any purchases.

If you’re new to the sport of hunting waterfowl, let me explain more fully what these terms mean.

When you fire a rifle, pistol or shotgun shell into the air, you are actually sending tiny balls called pellets flying toward your target. These projectiles travel at high velocity and generally fall somewhere between 50 and 150 feet away from the muzzle of the weapon depending upon wind conditions.

Waterfowl hunters need to take advantage of favourable winds to hunt effectively. In order to ensure maximum accuracy, choke tubes are used to restrict airflow around the barrel so the projectile strikes its intended target.

As mentioned earlier, the best chokes for duck hunting are usually made of metal so they can be attached right to your firearm.

There are also “fixed length” chokes available, however, these products tend to feel awkward while firing offhand. Also, since they cannot be adjusted, they are useless for those wishing to change the size of their shot patterns.

In addition to being attached to your gun, another key consideration is whether the product offers smooth action.

Smooth operation means no jams or hang-ups during repeated firings or pulling back the lever on an adjustable choke.

Another factor to consider is the ease of cleaning. Since you’ll likely want to keep your gun in pristine condition, you’ll appreciate having a product that comes apart easily so you can perform maintenance chores such as tightening screws or replacing worn springs.

Finally, look for a product that provides reliable performance over time. After all, you won’t want your gun choked up for every single outing.

Remember, the best choke fits your handgun or shotgun perfectly. So, now that we’ve covered the basics, here are three great choices for the best choke for your handgun or shotgun.

The Best Choke For Steel Shot Duck Hunting

For decades, the standard choke for waterfowl hunters has been the Modified Cylinder Choke. Manufactured by Barnes Bullets, this product line consists of four popular variants including the Traditional, Standard, Deluxe and Improved versions.

Each model differs slightly, yet all deliver superior reliability and consistency. While each version is suited to a specific cartridge, I highly recommend the Traditional Model for beginners.

Sporting writer Jack O’Connor described this particular variant as follows: “This Carlson’s Choke Tube model produces the smallest pattern, and gives almost constant pressure throughout the range.”

Other noteworthy characteristics include wide bore tubing and easy adjustment knob placement.

Another choice worth considering is the Code Goose tubes from Patternmaster. Like other brands of chokes, this product is manufactured by Patternmaster and is known for producing repeatable patterns.

One thing to note though is that the Improved series uses thinner walled tubing than others. Because of this, shots fired with this style of choke will expand more quickly than normal, causing greater recoil.

To counteract this effect, users must purchase specially sized shells. Fortunately, this is rare among seasoned shooters but newcomers might encounter problems initially.

Regardless, I still believe that the Code Goose tubes from Patternmaster deliver exceptional value for the money. Its main drawback is that it does not offer enough versatility to cover multiple calibres.

That said, if you choose to buy a second handgun, chances are you’ll already have one equipped with an improved choke.

Whether you prefer to adapt existing firearms or build custom ones, remember that your goal is to achieve maximum efficiency regardless of which brand of choke you select.

Although price is always a concern, buying the best choke possible doesn’t necessarily cost more. Ultimately, choosing wisely can help save you hundreds of dollars per season!

Is A Modified Choke Good For Duck Hunting?

Who does not like duck hunting? However, the fact that mostly creates debate among the players is whether or not to use modified chokes. What many people do not know is that a modified choke can be an efficient and dependable method of choking ducks.

Modified chokes are best

To find the most effective choke, you should think about the following factors. Selecting a suitable choke is the first step. You can find both modified and enhanced modified chokes.

When it comes to duck hunting, modified chokes function better than standard chokes since they are tailored to the specific needs of the sport. Their pinpoint accuracy and narrower patterns make them ideal for killing ducks at close range.

You get different options

For duck hunters, it can be difficult to determine which choke is best. You can pick from a wide variety of shot sizes and shapes. For choking/killing ducks, the best modified choke is one that suits your hunting approach – 12, 16, and 20 gauge.

When shooting at birds, you get to choose from light, medium, or heavily modified chokes. The optimal one for your hunt will depend on the species you are after, want to choke or kill, and distance.

In the end

Due to the wide variety of chokes available for duck hunting and the wide variety of hunters’ individual preferences and needs, there is no single correct answer to this subject.

However, the modified chokes of different shapes and sizes are your best option. The primary reason is that a modified choke is designed according to your needs.

A Quick Note About Shot Patterns

Shot patterns refer to the spread or dispersion of individual pellet groups resulting from a given load of ammunition. Depending on whether the shooter is using a centerfire or rimfire weapon, the distance at which he/she achieves optimal targeting will vary greatly.

Generally speaking, sportsmen with little experience will require shorter distances whereas veteran marksmen will benefit from increased reach.

By understanding the advantages of various choke designs, you’ll be better prepared to determine which setup suits your abilities best.

One common misconception about shooting involves assuming that changing the size of your shot group automatically changes the flight path of the bullet. Nothing could be further from the truth.

A typical 12 gauge shotgun fires 2 3/4 inch shells at velocities reaching 1125 fps.

According to Federal Cartridge Company, a 4-ounce 00 buckshot load creates a grouping measuring 27 inches across within 30 yards.

W.R. Case & Son introduced a new 6 oz. Magnum Rimfire load which shoots a similar pattern at 25 yards. Shooting the exact same amount of lead-based material using 2 separate cartridges produced drastically different patterns.

Thus, although increasing or decreasing the size of your shot group can improve overall effectiveness, doing so won’t alter the trajectory of the projectile itself.

Final Words

These are the best chokes for duck hunting. We did extensive trials before writing this post and came to conclusion.

Every hunting season and hunter is different. But everyone will find at least one good choke in this list that will suit their hunting needs.
